Hymnus was composed for Egham and District Choral Society in 1986, and has received many performances by choral societies, chamber choirs, youth choirs and school choirs since, both here and in France. It is for SATB (with a few easy divisions) and Organ and Brass – or just organ. No soloists. Duration about 6 minutes.

Its Latin text is suitable for Christmas, but the piece may be performed at any time of year.

It is a triumphant piece with rich harmonies and climaxes, which always wakes up the audience. It is short enough to be used as an anthem for a noisy evensong.

The brass version is for 4 trumpets, 3 Trombones, Tuba, Timpani and Organ – the same scoring as the Rutter Gloria (no accident).
